A permanent resident is a non-Canadian citizen who has been awarded Permanent resident status in Canada after arriving. Permanent residents are citizens of other countries.
Any temporary visitor like a student or a foreign worker cannot be considered a permanent resident.
Refugees resettled from foreign countries become permanent residents through the Government-Assisted Refugee Program or the Private Sponsorship of Refugees Program.
When a person applies for refugee status in Canada, they do not become a permanent resident.
The document that proves your permanent residency is a Permanent Residence Card (or PR Card for short). This document is needed for travels outside of the country and to prove your legal immigration status in Canada.
There are a few ways to get your Canadian permanent residency status
- Express Entry:- Express Entry is a process that the Government of Canada uses to manage the applications of Skilled Workers. Through this process, the government of Canada decides whether the applicants (skilled workers) are eligible for immigration and permanent residence or not. The applicants have to go through 3 steps to get immigration but first, they have to check their eligibility for immigration & permanent residency. They have to answer a few questions and once they are approved by the authorities they can proceed to other steps.
- Provincial Nomination:- This program is for people who want to live in certain provinces in Canada. They have the required education, and skills to contribute to the economy of that province. Every province runs it’s on provincial nomination program and has its own specific requirements. You must submit an Express Entry profile and show that you meet the minimum criteria for Express Entry, including being eligible for one of the immigration programs it covers.
- Investors Entrepreneurs:-Canada always welcomes successful businesses that are willing to expand their horizons. The Canadian Business immigration program is a system devised to facilitate and help businesspersons who’re planning to expand and also looking for new challenges. Also, both the federal and provincial governments are happy to welcome and assist business owners in setting up their businesses. To gain entry through this program, the entrepreneur needs to have the intention of starting a new business to be operated in Canada. The business should also meet every criterion of a qualifying business. There are certain financial slabs that investors and entrepreneurs both need to keep in mind in order to start a company/brand.
- Refugees:- Canada offers asylum to people looking for refuge due to unavoidable circumstances. The Canadian federal government also has a special immigration program designed to help these people. With the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship program, the country offers protection and assistance to settle down in the country. One can apply for asylum at any port of entry in Canada or at an inland CBSA or Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) office. The CBSA or IRCC officials are the sole authorities who judge whether the person is eligible for entry.
